André spent his first six months of training under Thiago Prado. As he became more dedicated to the sport and sought more frequent training than the police club could offer, Prado directed him to Mestre Luciano Nucci, better known as Casquinha, who would go on to become his coach.

Casquinha is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished coaches in São Paulo, having guided athletes such as Dimitrius Souza, Marcus Vinicius Ribeiro, Felipe Linhares, and Juan Kamezawa, among others. Under this highly competitive environment, André developed into one of the rising stars of the Brazilian circuit, receiving all of his promotions up to brown belt under Nucci’s guidance.

In 2016, while competing as a purple belt at the Pan American Championship, André met a student of Lucas Lepri. This meeting gave him the opportunity to connect with the legendary lightweight competitor. Following that first introduction, André attended several workshops with Lepri, and in 2018 he was invited to spend five months in Charlotte, North Carolina, training at Lepri’s academy in preparation for the World Championship. That experience eventually led to an invitation to become part of Lucas Lepri’s workgroup.

This close connection with Lucas and his team culminated in December 2019, when André Góis was awarded his black belt by Lucas Lepri.

André Góis

Full Name

André Nascimento dos Santos Góis

Nickname

In Brazil, André is commonly known as Nêga – although the name is mostly avoided in the US due to it being connoted as offensive. The origin of the nickname goes back to a famous Brazilian YouTuber/comedian named Pranchana Jack, who had a viral song named “Nêga do Subaco Cabeludo“. André was a fan of the song and his friends, jokingly, compared Gois’ with the kid featured on the video, which quickly became associated with André. At first, Góis was called the full extent of the song name, but with time it was shortened to Nêga.
